Stranger Things

Stranger+Things

Everyone is raving about Netflix’s show of the summer, Stranger Things. There had been much concern about the success of the show, due to its central cast of children targeted at an adult audience. However, Stranger Things is considered one of the biggest shows of 2016, captivating audiences of all ages. But what is the reason behind the massive success of Stranger Things?

One aspect of the show, that captured my interest right away, was the classic 80s movie-feel. Not only does this bring up feelings of nostalgia for 80s kids, but also the generation of today, who might have parents that lived in the era whom passed down their favorite 80s movies to their kids. Every scene reminded me of movies like E.T., Goonies, Stand By Me, a variety of Stephen King adapted films, and even Pretty in Pink. If you are a fan of classic 80s films like I am, then Stranger Things is the show for you.

While watching the show, I loved the age diversity of actors in the series. I felt that the wide age range of characters is really what pushed the show to reach such a wide audience. While the idea of a child cast seemed like an impediment, it was the kids of the show that kept me engaged the most. Each kid delivered excellent performances, and not for one moment did I cringe or feel bored by the child actors. One actress that impressed me in particular was 12 year old Millie Bobby Brown, who plays the character Eleven. While she spoke very few words, her physical acting ability was astounding for someone her age, or an actor of any age really. However, the actress that I was most excited about was 80s movie star, Winona Ryder. I was curious to see how she would adapt from film to television, but since the show aired, she has been receiving the best reviews of her career, and rightfully so.

In today’s age, it’s extremely difficult to find original shows. Every plot seems repetitive and overdone, but watching Stranger Things felt like a breath of fresh air. The show may have been inspired by 80s fantasy and horror, but something about the show felt unique. I was genuinely surprised and left wondering what was next in store each episode. While I won’t specifically talk about what made the show unique, because doing so would spoil the show, I will say that I had personally not seen anything like it before.

So if you haven’t seen Stranger Things yet, all I have left to say is “What are you waiting for”. Season 2 is confirmed for next year, so I recommend catching up before it airs and joining the Stranger Things mania.
