Hey, students! Where do you look for life lessons? Is it your parents? Maybe your friends? While those are both quality places to find guidance, you will never find a more immersive and molding avenue than books! Fiction or nonfiction, there is always something you can take from the text to benefit your life in some way, big or small. You can always learn from characters’ mistakes, adapt to a mindset a character has, or even grow in your vocabulary. There is a wide variety of ways you can learn and be changed by books, and our fellow students at iUP agree! Let’s see what they have to say!
To help iUP students see how books are a shaping and guiding avenue, especially for young impressionable readers, we ran to the book club members. Who would know better first hand? We got our friends, 7th grader Jeovanna Martinez, and 8th grader Teagan Sontz, to give us some insight on how these books changed them personally.
Teagen Sontz says that their favorite book is “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” by Jenny Han, and Teagen expresses, “Personally, I think it makes one person slightly smarter because you can gain a lot of life lessons from books. Plus, it’s better for you than TV.” Teagen explains that this is how books can shape young minds, and it’s so true! You can learn so much from books that otherwise you may have had to learn through trial and error.
Our other fellow student from the book club, Jeovanna Martinez, says their favorite book is “City Spies” by James Ponti. Jeovanna says, when asked how it changes her day to day life, “It made me look at things a bit differently in life.” Jeovanna also gave a very insightful and relatable opinion when she said, “[Books] give us imagination and a door to lead us out of reality and into the book world,” which, for me at least, is such a real and perfect way to put the feeling you get while reading a good book!
Overall, books are an amazing opportunity to learn, grow, be molded as a person, and learn from mistakes! Students at iUP, DON’T sleep on books and the truly special things they can teach you!
