Simon Pagenaud through the esses at GoPro GP of Sonoma

Simon Pagenaud was dominate on Sunday’s season finale in the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma. Pagenaud won the pole and race, leading almost all of the 85 lap race. It was his fifth win of the season, and ninth of his career. The day was even more special for Pagenaud, as he brought home his first Indycar championship. “My whole career has been about today and getting to this point,” the 32 year-old Frenchman said. “When you can perform 100% under pressure like this, it’s a great feeling.” Pagenaud finished second in the first two races of the season, before winning three races in a row, being Long Beach, Barber, and Indianapolis Grand Prix. His next win came weeks later at Mid Ohio, and two races later is where he made the move that won him the championship. Late in the race at Texas, Pagenaud backed out of a four wide battle for the lead and finished fourth, as Graham Rahal won in the fifth closest finish in Indycar history! It was the fourteenth Indycar championship for team owner Roger Penske, in the teams 50 year history.
