A New Technique For Solving Cancer From Microsoft?

In yet another venture in Microsoft’s long, long list of investments, Microsoft has now started to try and solve cancer as if it were a computer science program that needed to be debugged. Microsoft released the statement of trying to solve cancer with computer science on Tuesday, September 20th, 2016. The ongoing research for this new take on cancer is taking place in Microsoft’s lab in Cambridge, England.

The general idea of the Computer Science Vs Cancer argument is that if someone can map the ‘code’ of cancer, we can understand exactly how the problem occurs, where the ‘bugs’ are in the code of cancer, and then re-code those bugs to fix cancerous cells. Jasmine Fisher, one of the many researchers working on this problem, said that ‘If you can figure out how to build these programs, and then [fix] them, it’s a solved problem.’

Microsoft says that it has around 150 people working on this project, from computer scientists to biologists. Justine Alford, Cancer Research U.K.’s senior science information officer, said that “We hope this ambitious project will lead to discoveries that help in the battle against cancer.”

One of the biggest problems for this project is the sheer amount of information that the researches have to analyze and cope with. There are over 200 Unique types of cancer, and sorting information about each one can be very challenging. To see how this project will pan out, we’ll just have to wait and see what Microsoft, the tech giant, is able to do for the ongoing battle against cancer.
