When we thought nature couldn’t get any stranger, it just did.

This little guy was discovered just last month by the E/V Nautilus, which is a large exploration vehicle that has been finding new species of ocean life for a while now. This little squid-octopus thing was dubbed the name ‘purple guy’ by the scientists on board the Nautilus.

Purple guy is actually not a squid or an octopus, but a sub-species of squid called a ‘stubby squid’. Stubby squids are actually closely related to cuttlefish, which is why this little fellah looks like a mix of all three of them…perhaps the most unnerving part of him is the eyes. They seem to be just as surprised to see you as you are to see him.

One scientist on board the Nautilus even remarked that it “Looks like some kid dropped their toy on the sea floor.”
