Huge crash at Las Vegas in 2011. Wheldon is upside down on left side.

On Sunday, it will be five years since the tragic crash that took the life of 2005 Indycar champion Dan Wheldon.  In the 2011 Indycar championship race, on lap 11, the worst crash in Indycar history happened.  Wade Cunningham and Sebastian Savvedra made contact, sending Savvedra spinning down into the path of JR Hildebrand.  Hildebrand went over the 17 of Savvedra and sailed into the catch fence.  Dan Wheldon, Will Power, and Pippa Mann also went over cars and flipped.  Fifteen cars were involved in the crash, and the race was red flagged.  Power was transported and released from the hospital that day, but he had suffered a compression fracture in the upper back.  Hildebrand was kept overnight and had a severely bruised sternum.  Mann was kept overnight and had surgery on her severely bruised pinkie.  Both Hildebrand and Mann were released the next day.  Wheldon wasn’t so lucky.  He was airlifted to University Medical Center and was pronounced dead on arrival.  Nearly two hours after the crash, Randy Bernard, Indycar CEO, announced the death.  He said, “Indycar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today. Indycar, its drivers and team owners, has decided to end the race. In honor of Dan Wheldon, the drivers have decided to do a five-lap salute in his honor. It will take place in approximately 10 minutes. Thank you.”  Wheldon’s head hit one of the posts in the catch fencing, giving a fatal blow to his head.  Wheldon won the 2005 Indycar championship and won the Indy 500 in 2005 and 2011.  He won 16 Indycar races in his career.  Wheldon was honored by the new 2012 chassis being named the DW12, the DW in honor of Wheldon.  He is still missed by everyone in Indycar nearly five years later, and the day is known as the darkest day in Indycar because of the severity of the crash.
