The Mavs Business Marketing Day provided an amazing opportunity for iUP students to learn about what goes on behind the scenes at the Mavericks organization. Additionally, students gained real world insight from a lineup of business professionals, one of them being Jonathan Kornblith, Vice President of Entertainment and In-Game Presentation at the Dallas Mavericks. Students got to hear firsthand about his dedication and perseverance that is needed to excel in this competitive environment.
Kornblith, who has spent 12 seasons with the Mavericks and 28 seasons in the NBA overall, shared his journey of starting at the bottom of the barrel. Kornblith shares “One night I would pick contestants, one night I would throw T-shirts at our T-shirt toss, one night I would stand at the water tent and hand out water, and one day I would stuff envelopes. I just wanted to do anything and everything, so I was there every day. Whatever you wanted me to do, I was there”. His story emphasizes the importance of gaining hands-on experience and taking advantage of every opportunity.
For students looking to break into this competitive industry, Kornblith offered valuable advice, “I wish I had talked to my teachers in college. Ask questions and talk to people who can help you.” He stressed the importance of networking and gaining experience, stating, “Experience is huge. Build that resume, it’s not too late to start.”
His insights tied directly into the principles of DECA, reinstating the organization’s emphasis on leadership, professionalism, and real-world application of business concepts. The ability to pivot when necessary, as Kornblith states, is essential in both business and life “With the experience I gained, we were able to pivot when the world had to pivot.”
In addition, Kornblith spoke about the value of teamwork, listening, and collaboration in the workplace, all of which are key skills that DECA encourages its members to develop. “Collaboration is important, listening is important,” he stated, highlighting the role of effective communication in a successful career.
Billy Philips, VP of Corporate Sponsorship, provided impactful advice about the power of social media and teamwork. “Before you press send, please say to yourself, Will this ruin my friendship? Will this ruin my opportunity to get a job in the future? Will this ruin my opportunity to be successful in school?” He reminded students that “social media is so powerful, use it in a positive way.” Furthermore, he shared a critical element of success: “One thing we could not be successful without, and that is teamwork.”
Alexandria Williams, Director of Marketing, Corporate Sponsorships & Merchandise, reinforced the impact of different social media platforms, stating, “TikTok and Instagram gets you clout and likes while LinkedIn can get you a job.” She spoke about the importance of networking and expanding your circle. Moreover, she encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones, advising, “Don’t be afraid to move. I mean city, state, country. Don’t be afraid to move around to help your growth.”
Gabe Flores, Director of Digital Marketing, shared his journey to success, proving that hard work can outweigh the name of a big school. “I didn’t go to a big school, I didn’t go to an Ivy League school, but I put in the sweat and effort to get to where I am today,” he shared. “Hard work is always a valuable quality. Put that effort into every opportunity.” His story exemplifies the power of determination and resilience.
So what do iUP students gain from this experience?
- Networking. Students learned the importance of how crucial connections and networking is in the business world. LinkedIn is one of the most important social media platforms that can be utilized to make those connections even behind the screen!
- Digital awareness. Presenting yourself online is just as important as how you present yourself in person. So, before you click post, leave a comment, or share a video, think to yourself “Is this how I want to be presented?” Remember the digital landscape lasts forever! As society progresses and technology advances, be mindful!
- Hard work pays off. Success doesn’t come from what school you studied at or where you started in life, but how much effort you put into growing and seizing the opportunity.
This event was not only fun but it provided students with insight into the professional sports industry, as well as reinforcing the values that DECA promotes. Students left with valuable advice from industry experts that they will carry on with them into their careers and future. Thank you to the Dallas Mavericks Organization for hosting this event and GHS and iUP DECA for providing students with the means to attend this event!
