I pulled my hood tighter around my head. What is going on? I picked up my pace from a fast walk to a small jog and finally into a full blown sprint. I ran as fast as I could for home but it was still following me. I glanced behind me and saw its long black cloak grazing the concrete floor as it speedily floated away from me around a corner. Thank goodness! It must have gotten tired of following me. I just need to make it home, then the dare will be complete. I sprinted around the corner and skidded to a stop. It had looped around the building and was now floating toward me getting closer and closer until it stopped no more than 3 feet directly in front of me. It stood blocking my path with its long, bony fingers curling into fists. I gasped and stumbled backward. There stood the Grim Reaper, hovering off the ground ever so slightly so that just the tip of it’s cloak grazed the concrete floor of the alley.
The Grim Reaper laughed a dark, menacing laugh saying, “I can smell your fear boy,” I let out a small whimper. “You cannot run from me” continued the Grim Reaper, “Give me back what is mine” Its voice dropped so low, that it was almost like a whisper in the wind. I managed to find my courage and squeaked out, “I-It was only a-a harmless dare, I-I didn’t mean to insult you u-uhh sir.” “Your telling me that you accidently set a smoke bomb so you could steal my scythe?” The Grim Reaper responded with an amused chuckle. “Tell me where you and your little friends put it and your free to go” The Grim Reaper took a step closer dropping his voice menacingly low, “Or you and everyone else will be coming with me” I chocked out a small sob, “O-okay, I’ll call my friends and tell them to bring it back.” “Good” The Grim Reaper replies.
As I called my friends I thought back to 2 hours ago…”I really don’t think this is a good idea…” I say as my friends all gather around my kitchen table. “Your such a worry wart.” one of my friends, Jakob, replied. The plan was for one of us to be the bait and when the smoke bomb goes off that person pretends to be dead so that the Grim Reaper will supposedly, come to collect the soul. After that, the rest of the group will grab the scythe, spit up and run away with it, the bait would then get the Grim Reaper to follow him and lead the Grim Reaper in the opposite direction so that the scythe would be theirs to keep. I was chosen, well more like dared, to be the bait. So if all went according to plan, once I got back to the house my prize was to get all the candy my friends got from trick-or-treating. As I ran around back to the house the Grim Reaper cut me off, as you know, and know I’m in a pickle. Did everyone actually get away with the scythe? Surely the Grim Reaper knows where his scythe is?? So again, what is going on??
I call my friends and I hear laughter. “What is going on?” I demand. “Oh hey,” Todd, my other friend replies, “We are waiting for you at the house, what’s the hold up?” “What’s the hold up!?!” I repeat, “The Grim Reaper caught me and I’m in trouble!!” I exclaim. There is a fresh round of laughter from the other side of the line. “Seriously guys, what is going on!?” I say angrily. “It was a prank dum dum! Jakob is dressed and the Grim Reaper to scare you!” I can hear Micheal and Ken cackling in the background. “A prank?” I say as I turn around to see the Grim Reapers hood down and Jakob’s head poking out of the cloak! I sigh, “Ok well I’ll be there in 5” There’s more laughter and then the line goes dead. “Very funny Jakob, very funny.” I say with my voice filled with as much sarcasm as I can muster. “It was actually really impressive that you guys pulled that off.” I say with a slight smile, still shaken and confused from all the was happening. “Yeah, it was Micheal’s idea. Pretty smart, huh?” Jakob laughed. “Totally.” I reply.
As we walk home Jakob says,“I can’t believe it actually worked! First off, the Grim Reaper isn’t real! Second, there is NO way a bunch of teenagers could steal its scythe even if it was real! And lastly… ah well I forgot the third reason but…HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!!!!” I laugh,” Your right, your right. I did find some things a little fishy… But I’m still confused about one thing, how did you float?” I ask. Jakob replies,”Magic!” Sparkling his fake bony fingers at me. We laugh as we enter the kitchen. “Sooooo??” Micheal asks, “How did it go?” Everyone laughs, “Great!” I say, “I escaped the GrIm ReApEr!” Saying its name a funny way. We all burst out in a fresh round of laughter. My mom walks in, “Ok everyone, time for bed, it’s almost midnight!” She says. There are lots of groans as we all head up the stairs. After we all get ready for bed we chat for a while before one by one everyone slowly drifts off to sleep. Right before I close my eyes I hear a voice, “I can smell your fear boy, you can not run from me.” It was so low that it was almost like a whisper in the wind. I gasp a sit up straight,” Jakob?? Jakob??? That’s not funny!” Jakob groans and says with genuine confusion, “What in the world are you talking about? Just go to sleep.” I shudder because deep down I know, he‘s telling the truth.
