How do you tell someone you like them without looking like a total moron?

Dear Lovestruck and Clumsy,

If you’ve been friends with that person for a few months or years maybe, I feel like you can just tell them but don’t be so abrupt about it, just kind of slowly bring it up (never write how you feel in a letter and give it to them though. I know from experience that never works). If it’s someone you don’t really know, try to be friends with them first and see if you really do like them as a person and not just for their looks or how they come off to other people.
