MOVIE QUOTES YOU’VE BEEN SAYING WRONG
There are so many things we vividly remember, that happen to be incorrect. Some people think it’s a coincidence that many people share the same memory that actually turned out to be incorrect. Others have a theory that we are experiencing a transition from an alternate universe, where small details are changed without our notice. This would be called a Mandela Effect.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Mandela Effect, it is basically when a large amount of people remember a small detail of something and being incorrect about it. This goes for Movie and sitcom titles, famous quotes, Brand names, a memory of someone dying when they really haven’t and so much more. There is no proof that the Mandela Effect is actually real but many theorists strongly believe in it. Check out these famous quotes you’ve probably been saying wrong, and determine what you’d like to believe.
10) Luke, I am your father.
Perhaps one of the most famous lines from Star Wars is, when Darth Vader reveals to Luke that he is in fact his father. (LINK 1) This quote has been used for years upon years and we have come to discover that no, this is not what was said. If you rewatch the scene you’ll actually hear “No, I am your father.” WHAT?! If you ask anyone what they heard they will most likely tell you it incorrectly.
I know it’s crazy, there are T shirts, posters and so much more merchandise that have “Luke I am your father” clearly written on them. No one has found an explanation for this but people continue to get mind blown after re watching the scene. What makes this quite scary is the fact that the majority of people remember this particular quote wrong.
9) “If you build it, they will come”
Ask anyone who’s watched “The Field Of Dreams” to recite this quote for you. Most likely they will respond to you incorrectly. The correct line would’ve been; “If you build it he will come.” No one remembers the inspiring quote as “he” but they all remember it as “they” (LINK 2). This is the quote that influenced the whole feeling of the movie.
No one can explain why it is that a lot of people have this particular memory. What confuses most people is how we got two completely different lines from the scene. There is a significant difference between the word he and they. Most people assumed the word ‘they’ in the line, as in the people, but what seemed to be correctly revealed was actually the word he. Go rewatch the scene and try giving yourself an explanation.
8) “Hello Clarice”
From one of the most famous horror movies “The Silence Of The Lambs” the quote ” Hello Clarice” has been used an infinite amount of times. You can search it up on YouTube and find many people mind blown to the fact that they have been hearing and repeating this quote incorrectly. In the movie script (LINK 3) “Hello Clarice” is non-existent. The actual line that Dr.Lecter played by Anthony Hopkins was; “Good Evening Clarice”. People swear to watching the film hundreds of times and remembering it differently.
I’ve seen many gifs and clips of people clearly saying “Hello Clarice. Not to mention that that is also the way I remember it being said.
How did we go from Hello to Good evening? That is a question that remains unanswered, and by the looks of it I don’t think we’re expecting an explanation anytime soon.
7) “Toto, We’re not in Kansas anymore”
The Wizard Of Oz is one of the most famous classic films of all times. People of all different ages have been watching it since 1939. One of the most famous lines from the movie is when Dorothy notices she is not in Kansas anymore and says “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” Most people have seen this movie many times and recall the quote as ” Toto we’re not in Kansas anymore” or simply “were not in Kansas anymore.”
If you rewatch the scene, you’ll probably scratch your head in confusion and ask yourself how you’ve been remembering that incorrectly all along (LINK 4).
The two quotes differ majorly making people question everything. How do so many people remember the same thing incorrectly? The question remains unanswered today.
6) ” Mirror Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?”
I cannot begin to fathom how I feel about this particular misquoted movie line. I’m sure many of us can without a doubt say that we’ve either said or heard this quote incorrectly. Most people who have watched the 1938 “Snow White” film have heard, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” Truth be told we were wrong the whole time. The actual line from the movie is “Magic Mirror on the wall, Who’s the fairest of them all (LINK 5)?”
MAGIC MIRROR?! Since when did it become magic mirror on the wall? In 2012 a movie was released called Mirror, Mirror and it was based on Snow white. Yes, maybe you can say people just misheard it, but come on, there was a whole movie based on that one line. I don’t know about you but this one really hits me.
5) “Do you feel lucky, punk?”
Fans of the 1971 movie “Dirty Harry” all around the world are pretty much shook over this recent discovery of a misheard line from the movie. This particular one gets me because this quote has been misused by the majority of people who have seen this film, including it being written out on memes all over the internet! The actual quote is far from what we have been saying, prepare yourself to read the way Clint Eastwood actually said it in the movie.
The actual quote is (LINK 6) ‘You’ve got to ask yourself one question. Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?’ It’s completely mind blowing, I know! A lot of people are questioning if they’re just going crazy or if there may actually be a more complex explanation. Ask your friends and family what they heard, and be prepared to listen to their dramatic gasps when you tell them they’re in fact far from being right.
4) “Houston, we have a problem”
From the movie Apollo 13 that was released in 1995 many people remember the all time famous quote, “Houston we have a problem”. Little did they know they’ve been misusing that quote all along (LINK 7). People assumed the astronaut was telling the people monitoring that he is in a crisis, therefore “Houston we have a problem” makes sense. What was actually said was “Houston we’ve had a problem”, implying that they have had a problem in the past making it very possible they could have malfunctioning issues at the moment.
If you analyze what we heard and what was actually said, you’ll notice a big difference in both quotes. How we got a completely different line, is to be determined. Watch Apollo 13 again and maybe you can determine whether you misheard the quote all along, or if it is something more than that. Next time you’re in a crisis and try to pull a “Houston we have a problem” think again.
3) “I wanna make him an offer he can’t refuse”
The Godfather is a movie known and watched globally. Even people who haven’t watched this film probably know this quote. This quote has been heard many different ways by different people. Some people heard it correctly, if so they heard (LINK 8) “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse.”
However, there are many people who heard “I wanna make him an offer he can’t refuse” in that case they would be wrong. It is indeed very strange that such a globally known movie would have it’s most famous quote misused by many people. Perhaps we all heard it wrong and we may just be overthinking it. Either way the Mandela Effect is yet to be proven and no potential evidence has been found.
2) “Greed is good”
If you’ve seen the 1987 Drama film “Wall Street” you probably remember Gordon Gekko’s all time famous quote “Greed is good.” Let’s backtrack here for a second, you heard that completely wrong! The actual quote was (LINK 9) “The point is, ladies and gentlemen, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works.” How did we go from a three word sentence to a almost paragraph?!
This misheard quote is probably the most confusing because of the way we got it completely wrong. Either way, both quotes make sense but they still differ. There is an immense difference between the word good and works. How we got those two words mixed up is to a question that remains unanswered.
1)“We’re gonna need a bigger boat!”
Who remembers the nail biting, jaw dropping intense film Jaws? If your answer was “me!” you most likely remember the line “we’re gonna need a bigger boat.” This was what Brody said before he got an up close and personal view of a shark. If you remember hearing that quote you misheard it. The actual quote that was said was, “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”
Both the quote you’ve been repeating for years and the quote sound similar. However, they both still differ very much in their meaning. This line has been repeated in many different movies and TV shows (LINK 10) , implying that it is not only our mind playing tricks on us. When we think about it deeply, it may be a little overwhelming.
So now it is up to you to decide. Was this all a coincidence, or was it something more? How many quotes have you been saying wrong? The Mandela Effect is yet to be proven, but still there are many people who believe strongly in it.
