COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF MATCHUPS SET
Ohio State left out as Alabama takes No. 4 seed
The College Football Playoff teams were announced on Sunday, with Clemson as No. 1, Oklahoma as No. 2, Georgia as No. 3, and Alabama as No. 4. Ohio State, who beat Wisconsin 27-21 in the Big Ten championship, missed out as Alabama got in. Alabama went 11-1, but their loss to Auburn kept them out of the SEC Championship Game. Nick Saban, who said at this time last year that teams should have to win the Conference Championship, to get in the playoff, said this, “I think this team deserves an opportunity to get in the playoff by what they’ve been able to accomplish and what they’ve been able to do. Certainly not maybe in this game, but I think the team we played tonight is a very good football team, probably one of the best teams in the country.” Alabama will play No. 1 Clemson in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day, and the winner will play the winner of the Rose Bowl, which is between No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 3 Georgia, for the CFP Championship.
Oklahoma beat TCU 41-17 in the Big 12 Championship on Saturday to reserve their spot in the Playoff. Oklahoma Quarterback Baker Mayfield, who’s the Heisman favorite, was sensational. He was 15/23 for 243 yards and 4 TD’s, and ran for 65 yards on 6 carries. At this point, the Heisman debate is for the runner-up, as Baker Mayfield looks like he will clearly win the award. Mayfield will have to face a very good Georgia defense, consisting of Roquan Smith and Lorenzo Carter. But, Mayfield has shown that he can light up any defense in the country. Georgia and OU play in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day.
Clemson absolutely annihilated Miami in Saturday night’s ACC Championship 38-3. They held Miami to only 214 total yards and forced 3 turnovers. Clemson QB Kelly Bryant was stellar. He was 23/29 for 252 yards and 1 TD passing, and 9 rushes for 7 yards and a TD rushing. Clemson, who won the National Championship last year, looks to be in championship form this year, even without Deshaun Watson, who plays in the NFL for the Houston Texans. Dabo Swinney has Clemson peaking at the right time, and Clemson is the favorite to win the National Championship.
