K-Pop Demon Hunters is a movie you may have heard of once or twice in the past few months. Whether through hearing someone blast “Golden” in their car or scrolling through social media seeing everyone groove to “Soda Pop”, you may have wondered what this fad is all about. After all, what can be so interesting about a K-Pop band slaying demons? However, there is more than meets the eye to this film.
The internet loves this, and the internet is never wrong.
In June 2025, “K-Pop Demon Hunters” showed the film industry just “How It’s Done” when it came to captivating audiences and sparking the next global obsession. “K-Pop Demon Hunters broke the charts, in not just one, but several different ways.” states 6th grader Victoria Paige Gerenia. And she’s not wrong; it’s become a box office hit, a social media frenzy, and one of the most successful soundtracks in just the span of a few months.
It is annoyingly catchy, though.
When their songs aren’t busy sealing the Honmoon, they’re off topping the charts. The film’s soundtrack has raked in various accolades. At Lollapalooza 2025, popular K-Pop group Twice performed “Takedown”, one of the many iconic songs from the film (Fragassi). “Golden”, a crucial song to the film, won a Grammy award for “Best Song Written for Visual Media”, becoming the first K-Pop song to win at the Grammys. Ironically, “Golden” claimed its rightful place at the Golden Globes, winning Best Song Motion Picture.
Additionally, they have received #1 on several different Billboard Charts, including the Billboard 200 (for both Albums and Singles). It also reigned in the Billboard Hot 100 list for eight weeks, with other songs following in the the top 10 (Dailey). Most recently, they won at the iHeart Radio Awards for K-pop Song of the Year (Fisher). All in all, this soundtrack has proved to be one outstanding, record-breaking sensation that has touched the hearts of many across the world.
The world will know you as pop stars. But you will be so much more than that.
One of the movie’s many charms is its ability to resonate with audiences of all ages. Each character faces distinct challenges and struggles, making their individual journeys deeply relatable.
One major theme throughout the film is the power of friendship, courage, and strength in the face of adversity. Whether they’re singing their hearts out on stage as world famous K-Pop idols or battling supernatural demons as hunters, Rumi, Mira, and Zoey stay true to themselves, remain loyal to one another, and support each other along the way. “I think the movie conveys a message about the importance of teamwork, courage, and staying true to yourself. It shows that even when faced with dark forces or difficult challenges, unity and belief in your own strengths can help overcome anything. It also touches on the value of friendship,” says iUP 5th grader Kaylee Bernal.
“I loved the message that sometimes the bad guys/demons are the secrets we keep from those we love, and that in the end the trio loves and supports each other, scars and all,” says Mrs. Christine Jau, a teacher at iUP. Another resonant theme highlighted in the film is that the real “demons” aren’t always monsters lurking in the shadows, but the fears, insecurities, and unspoken truths we carry within ourselves. The movie uses its supernatural storyline to mirror the very real ways people hide parts of themselves, even from those they trust most. By the end, the trio’s willingness to open up to one another becomes its own kind of victory, showing that honesty, acceptance, and unconditional support for one another can be just as powerful as any magical weapon.
Breaking Barriers and Redefining Representation
In previous years, media and entertainment sidelined Asian characters, reducing them to stereotypes or using them as token representation. K-Pop Demon Hunters is a powerful contradiction to this. The demon and hunter archetypes portray powerful, complex Asian leads who are central to the story and not just an afterthought to check off a box. The main characters each deal with the unique struggles that come with their roles, showing resilience during and beyond their supernatural battles.
K-Pop Demon Hunters is more than a surface level kids movie. It’s inspiring a generation that can see themselves reflected in heroes who look like them and helping people connect with their identities in ways mainstream media rarely offered before.
How KPDH Highlights Korean Culture
One key element of the movie is the incorporation of Korean culture and folklore. This includes additions such as Derpy, a blue-furred tiger and Sussie, a multi-eyed magpie. Inspired by the babo horangi, or “foolish tiger,” in Minhwa folk art, Derpy the tiger acts as a guardian for Sussie the magpie, a bringer of good news (Tudum by Netflix, Alex Frank, 2025).
Furthermore, the movie contains scenes in settings unique to Korea, such as hanok villages, night markets, and Seoul’s neon districts. The characters can also be seen in Buddhist temples, shrines, and shamanic houses.
Other aspects of the movie help showcase Korean food, clothing, and language. These inclusions in the movie have sparked another wave of interest in Korean culture, inspiring viewers to learn more about the country’s history and traditions and engage with a sense of appreciation. Victoria Paige, a 6th grader here at iUP, says that the movie “…helped Western/American culture appreciate not just Korean, but overall Asian culture and see its true beauty.”
What K-Pop Demon Hunters Tells Us About Audiences
KPDH proves that viewers want more than flashy visuals. They want authenticity, character development, and emotional depth. The story encapsulates this masterfully, with a blend of music, mythology, and layered character arcs that resonate.
Even the song and dance sequences on the soundtrack are not just for show. They express themes of self love and discovery, being comfortable in your own skin, and finding strength and togetherness with the people who have your back no matter the situation. As 5th grader Kaylee Bernal says, “The choreography and music really brought energy to the story, making it both entertaining and emotionally engaging.”
The demon-hunting plot draws people in, but it’s the characters’ individual personal struggles and conflicts that keep them invested. Audiences crave narratives that not only surprise and excite them momentarily, but give them something to think about long after the action scenes end.

“I really enjoyed the movie, it was a 10/10 for me! The first thing I liked was the K-pop influence and references such as fan meetups, reality shows, showcases, and live fandom charts! This movie showed the depths of being an idol while still including the story!” – Priso Ndumbe, Freshman.
“I thought it was a great movie that addressed heavy topics such as the way we deal with big feelings like shame, and the importance of being ourselves. My 8 and 4 year old are huge fans, and we’ve had several conversations about it and the deeper meaning. I think they did well with the music (the tracks are catchy and fun), visuals, and weaving in a meaningful story.” – Mrs. Fedorko, Professor
“I think the K-Pop Demon Hunters movie was great. Before I had seen it, I had already heard some of the songs and I heard all the good things my friends and family had said about it but I was absolutely blown away when I saw the movie for myself. The story, characters, and animation are all fantastic, and I just loved every second of it.” Danny Hall, Senior
“I think it was peak cinema. The story was thought out. It had the right balance of funny, heart, K-Drama flair, and emotional depth. The intro, and the opening song was a great way to start the movie. It’s a good tactic of getting the viewer hooked. The songs were amazing, and the directors took time to give the characters a backstory and depth. Even their hair holds a story. The ending just leaves me wanting more! 100000000000000000000/10”- Anonymous
