It’s safe to say that you’ve probably heard the names Charli and Dixie D’Ameilo at least once in the past year. They are two of the most-followed people on TikTok, but they have recently made headlines for the way they treated/acted in front of their friend/cook, Aaron May. In a video posted on November 16th, 2020, the D’Ameilo family premiered their new series “Dinner With The D’Amelio’s”. In the video can see Dixie gagging at the sight/knowledge of the food(which had snails in it), Charli also then says “Do we have dinosaur nuggets”, in front of the chef. This sparked a lot of backlash, saying that they should’ve been more respectful towards the cook, who made them a whole meal. Charli also received backlash for saying she hopes she gets 100 million followers by the end of the year, this was not met well with the fans. Many fans said that when she said that they felt as though they were just a number.

When asked what she thought of the situation, an anonymous iUPrep student stated “I thought they were both being disrespectful because they were spitting out, throwing up, and asking for new food in front of their personal chef (even though he was a friend) but I don’t think it was canceled worthy and she def shouldn’t be getting sent death threats. she literally got 100 million followers within a year and people are expecting her to act perfect even though she’s only 16. I think the whole thing got blown way out of proportion but I still do think they should try to be more respectful especially in front of the person that made them their food”. And when asked about the follower situation she said, “I think people are taking it too far. she was just saying it would be cool if she hit 100 million exactly 1 year after she hit 1 million”

Dixie responded to the backlash in a TikTok she had said that it was the crew playing a joke because they knew that she throws up a lot thinking/eating “gross” foods. Charli responded in an Instagram live saying that “All of this is happening because of a misunderstanding, I just feel like that’s not OK, and if this is the community that I’m in and the community that I put myself in, I don’t know if I wanna do that anymore.” Despite the backlash and Charli losing followers, she became the first person to hit 100 million followers on TikTok, on November 23rd. What will be next for these two? Another backlash? In the ever-changing world that surrounds us, we’ll soon find out.
