PROM-POSALS

At Plano East

My Mom said back in her day, the boy would walk up to the girl and simply say,” Will you go to prom with me?”

Nowadays this is not the case- prom-posals are required. A prom-posal is very similar to a wedding proposal; the man goes all out to ask his special girl to prom.

When I say all out, I mean all out. At Plano East Senior High school, a senior girl was given a pug puppy with a sign that asked her to go to prom.  Whether it be puppies, flowers or chocolates, it is no joke that the prom-posal has become a very costly and universal thing.  What is it about this one school that makes the guys go all out?

What’s the hype?  How did getting asked to prom become such a big thing? Why would a girl accept a puppy as a prom-posal? These are all questions that will be answered; however some of the answers the students of America are not going to like.

Devyn Justice, a senior at Plano Senior high school said, “The guys here at East have a little competition going as to who can out do the other, and the girls like to see that they have a proposal good enough to put on social media. That’s all anyone cares about is social media.”

While it is sweet and thoughtful to ask a girl to prom cutely, there is a line that is crossed when the boy goes above and beyond to get the girl to say yes.  It is like the boy thinks, “How could she say no to a puppy?” No one could say no to that face. Relationships in teens have become more about social status than feelings in general. These expectations that teens set on each other on a simple proposal is ludacris.  My Mom always said it wasn’t the gift that mattered but the thought that counted. Teens should remember that next time they decide to buy puppies for girls to get them to go to prom.
