Why should you join the Cybersecurity Club?
Well, you learn how to protect yourself on the internet, make friends, learn cybersecurity tips & tricks, prepare for a future in cybersecurity, strengthen your computer science skills, and compete in fun cybersecurity competitions!
When asked why students joined this club, one student said, “I joined because if there’s anything important to a person, it’s security. I’ve always hated being watched and tracked by sites, and to have your computer breached is definitely a scare. Cybersecurity is the knowledge of protecting your computer from anything, like a wall for a castle. The more strengths you have, you’ll have more things to protect your castle. More walls like firewalls, sentries like anti-viruses, moats like two-step verification, and crocodiles…which are crocodiles. You get the picture.” That is why this student joined the Cybersecurity Club! You can also learn about things like this. Also if you find a phishing email in your school email, be sure to report it to a teacher or an administrator so they can make the technology department aware.
What makes the Cybersecurity Club special or different from other clubs?
A student in the Club said, “I think it’s because of the sparser, but still informative lessons. … Cybersecurity Club usually meets at a good time for all.” It’s true that the Club does meet at a good time for all and that it’s really informative. Cybersecurity Club meets biweekly at 3:00 pm on Thursdays.
Cybersecurity Club is also great for those who want to pursue a career in cybersecurity. If you want to pursue a career in cybersecurity, this is the perfect club for you! The club will teach you about what cyber happenings are going on in the world. You will also learn tips and tricks on how to be safe and not to get hacked. One student in the Cybersecurity Club said, “Second choice, yes. First it’s civil engineering. If that doesn’t work out, being a white hat for cybersecurity is my pick.” The club is a great place to learn more about the careers in cybersecurity too! The club has talked about many careers in cybersecurity including, white hat hacker, digital forensic analyst, and so many more!
The Cybersecurity Club has an optional competition starting October 1st and ending on October 31st. It’s called U.S. Cyber Challenge. If you win the competition, they offer scholarships! If you are in the top 100 of the USA, you will be invited to a free virtual summer cyber camp. It’s one week long, you will be taught by top cyber instructors, and you will compete in competitions that give scholarships; this year they are giving out more than $2 million in college scholarships and $14 million in elite training. The club also offers many FREE cybersecurity learning websites. The websites offer free courses that teach you about cybersecurity and how to stay safe.
It’s October which means it’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month! Don’t forget to watch out for phishing emails!
