AWARDS SEASON: JANUARY 2016

The beginning of 2016 kick-starts a long and exciting year of award shows, and from the Oscars to the Teen Choices, families all across the world tune in to see if their favorite actors, movies, and artists will take home gold.

January has wrapped up a few of the ceremonies, including the Golden Globes, a very popular cinematic awards show. Big winners include Leonardo DiCaprios The Revenant, which came out on top over other competitors such as Mad Max: Fury Road and Room. Brie Larson beat many talented actresses to “Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama” and DiCaprio won the same title in the male category against Will Smith (Concussion) for The Revenant. Other notable winners included Jennifer Lawrence in Joy (“Actress in Musical or Comedy”), Matt Damon in The Martian (“Actor in Musical or Comedy”), and Aaron Sorkin in Steve Jobs (“Screenplay of a Motion Picture”).

Actors such as Channing Tatum, Sandra Bullock, Shailene Woodley and Chris Hemsworth all went home with an award, along with TV personalities Ellen DeGeneres for “Favorite Daytime TV Host” and Maddie Ziegler for “Seriously Popular”. The most recent awards show was the Screen Actors Guild Awards – often seen as a “jury of your peers”, as it deals solely with performances, and only registered Screen Actors Guild members can vote. The talented Viola Davis went home a winner for How to Get Away with Murder and Brie Larson for Room. Other actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Idris Elba, and Alicia Vikander won for their incredible work in The Revenant, Beasts of No Nation, and The Danish Girl, respectively. Ensembles that won included that of Spotlight, Downton Abbey, and Orange Is The New Black, and the stunt ensemble of Mad Max: Fury Road.
