I woke up early in the morning, but that was normal. My family and I live on a farm, so we try to finish chores early in the morning. I’m always the first one to wake up so I wake up my parents and my two siblings but when I got to my parents room first I knocked on the door. Nothing. I knocked again. Nothing. I turned the door knob. The door was unlocked. “Weird” I thought. I entered the room.
As my eyes adjusted to the dark I noticed my parents weren’t there. I went to both of my sibling’s rooms, and they were also gone. I went outside and felt a cold breeze. “Weird, it’s the middle of summer and there’s cold breezes. Things must really be going crazy” I wondered. I looked around, everything was there.
I went into the barn, I hated the barn, it smelled of animals and other things I hated, but this time I didn’t smell anything. “What’s happening?” I wondered. I walked to each pen and none of the animals were there. “Okay this is either a nightmare or everything has disappeared” I thought. I got closer and closer to the fields of wheat while I was running to the road until I saw something flash and the wheat rustled.
“I am never going into those farm fields, that’s where the horror of every horror movie is.” I thought. I drifted away from the fields. I finally got to the road and the wind was gusting with cold air. “Not good, not good, something is definitely wrong.” I thought. I ran down the street to my friend’s farm. “He has to be there, he has to also be having this problem or else I will think I am the only thing alive.” I thought.
As I got closer to the farm I saw his house had no lights on. “Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, he’s gone too isn’t he.” I thought. I ran as quick as I could to his house, but I saw something flash at the edge of my eyes into the tall grass next to the road. I stopped. I looked into the grass, I saw nothing at all. “I must be going crazy, but I saw the grass move. Something has to be in there. Is it the same thing that flashed into the wheat fields?” I thought.
I continued running again, trying to get as far away from there as I could. When I finally got to my friend’s house, I saw the same flash in the corner of my eyes enter one of his wheat fields and the wheat rustled. “I am definitely in some sort of danger.” I thought. I entered his house. Nothing stirred inside, I got farther in. Nothing stirred at all.
I checked his room, he wasn’t there. I also checked his parents room. The window was open. “Weird” I thought, I kept searching until I searched every room in the house. I was about to leave until I saw one more door to another room at the bottom of a staircase. “I’m gonna die aren’t I, well sometimes I gotta take risks.” I thought. Down I went into the basement, afraid of what’s going to happen.
At the door to the basement I turned on the light for the basement and went in. I almost panicked just looking into the room, but at least it had lights. And then I heard a voice that said “If I’m going to make my last stand here, I would prefer it outside but I can also do it here!”
“He is alive, I thought I was the only person alive. Now I have to tell him I am alive.” I thought. But before I took another step he came out of his hiding spot and was holding a large bat. He also looked really tired, he must’ve not slept much.
“Someone is alive other than me, I’m so relieved.” He said
“I was thinking the same thing.” I said
“Hey, do you know what happened to everything?” He said
“No sadly, what happened to you when you woke up?” I said
“I woke up in the middle of the night and I felt a cold breeze come through my window, and I thought, it’s the middle of summer and the nights are cold, strange. I went to my parents room and knocked on the door, there was no response when I turned the door knob and the door was unlocked. I was out of mind once the door was unlocked but I kept opening the door and I saw the window was opened. I ran to the window and I looked out of the window but I saw no trace that my parents left through the window. So I ran down into the basement and hid in here until you came along. How about you, how did you get here?” He said
I told him what had happened though I did not include the flashes in the corner of my eye. “He’s going to be scared and want to hide in the basement if he hears that and we won’t be able to do anything.”
“Should we head to town now that we know others are alive? There could be others hiding in town.” He said
“I like that idea, maybe we can find our parents.” I said
So we walked up the stairs out of the basement and I thought “We may know others are alive but there are still those flashes to worry about.” We got out of the house and the wind was roaring now, I could barely hear anything and my body felt like it could shatter at the touch. “This must be what those flashes were about.” I muttered.
“Wait, what flashes?” My friend yelled over the wind
“Okay, I left something out of my story. I sometimes saw flashes in the corner of my eye.” I yelled over the wind
My friend looked horrified. “That’s why I didn’t tell you I thought you would be horrified.” I yelled
“No, not that, That.” He said as the wind dialed down he pointed towards the pumpkin patch that we use for the pumpkin soup every thanksgiving. I saw what he meant once I looked at it. All of the pumpkins were fully grown and some of them had faces carved into them and the ones that were, were glowing.
“How about we go back into the basement don’t you think?” I said
“I don’t think we can.” He said pointing at this horse rider but that horse rider isn’t like any other horse rider. They had a carved pumpkin on their head and there were green flames coming from where the carved parts of the pumpkin were. He also had a sheathed sword.
“I, uh, duh, ummm.” I stuttered. I threw a rock at the rider. He caught it with one hand and tossed it aside. He grabbed the hilt of the sword and pulled it out of the sheath. It was a dark black sword with a ghostly looking hilt.
“I think that’s our cue to run!” My friend said, though I didn’t really hear him. I was losing conscience and then I fell limp.
I rolled in my nice comfy bed, I opened my eyes and I looked at the ceiling.
“I knew it was all a dream!” I said
I rolled over to my right and immediately thought it wasn’t.
“Well, do you want me to fill you in on what happened while you were out.” My friend said
“Sure.” I said
“Well, After you passed out I thought I was on my own so I grabbed a stick and was prepared to thwack it if needed but instead of it charging at me it wailed so I looked behind me and the sun was rising and the thing rode away then disappeared in a poof of smoke, the pumpkins didn’t turn back normal though, after awhile our parents came back and they filled me in while we carried you back to bed. Our parents got a warning that strange stuff was happening and that they should head to town, So they packed up in a hurry. Both of our parents said that they were in such a hurry they forgot to make sure everyone was with them. They did not pack the animals though.” He explained.
“I really don’t want to deal with anything like this again.” I said
